Definition Bone marrow is the soft, spongy material found inside bones. The bone marrow contains a network of blood vessels and fibers surrounded by fat and by cells that give rise to white blood cells (WBC´s), red blood cells (RBC´s), and platelets. The production of blood cells is the chief function of the bone marrow. In children, the cells that give rise to blood cells can be found throughout the marrow. In adults, these cells are found mostly in the marrow of the bones of the chest, hips, back, skull, and of the upper arms and legs. All blood cells develop from very immature cells called stem cells. Most stem cells are found in the bone marrow, although some, called peripheral blood stem cells, circulate in blood vessels throughout the body. Stem cells can divide to form more stem cells, or they can go through a series of cell divisions by which they become fully mature blood cells. Most blood cells mature in the bone marrow. However, some white blood cells (also called lymphocytes) complete their maturation in the thymus, spleen or lymph nodes.

Context As a result of suppression of endogenous erythropoiesis, the tremendous expansion of the bone marrow is averted and the resulting bone deformities that would otherwise lead to the characteristic grotesque “Cooley´s face” are prevented.
