| Definition |
In syngeneic transplantation, bone marrow is taken from an identical twin. Different people usually have different sets of proteins, called human leukocyte-associated (HLA) antigens, on the surface of their cells that allow white blood cells to distinguish the body´s own cells from those of another person. However, because identical twins have the same genes, they also have the same set of HLA antigens (they are said to be a perfect HLA match). As a result, the patient´s body usually accepts the graft (transplant). Given that identical twins represent only 0.3 percent of all births (1 birth out of every 270), syngeneic transplantation is rare.
