Definition |
In autologous transplantation, patients receive their own marrow or peripheral stem cells. Because the patient is the donor, HLA matching is not necessary; moreover, there is virtually no risk of GVHD. For autologous transplantation to be successful, the patient´s marrow must be relatively free of disease when it is harvested. In some patients, autologous transplantation is feasible because the cancer does not involve the bone marrow. (A sample of the bone marrow, removed through bone marrow aspiration, is checked for the presence of cancer cells.) In other patients, such as leukemia and lymphoma patients, initial treatment to induce remission (the disappearance of the signs of cancer) is necessary before bone marrow harvesting. Depending on their disease and other factors, patients may then either proceed immediately with the high-dose treatment and transplantation procedure or store their marrow and proceed with high-dose treatment and transplantation only if their disease returns.
