Definition |
Marrow or stem cell donor that is genotypically identical to the the thalassemic patient as far as the HLA system is concerned. Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from an HLA-identical donor is a rational therapeutic modality for the cure of b-thalassemia major as well as for other hemoglobinopathies. In the great majority of transplanted thalassemic patients, a full donor engraftment is observed and the donor´s type pattern of b globin chain synthesis is established. In some cases, there is the presence of mixed chimerism after BMT. This normally resolves into complete engraftment or leads to graft loss.

Context |
This 32-year-old male with Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia received a bone marrow transplant (BMT) from an HLA-identical donor. We analyzed the bone marrow with the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction to screen for the minor bcr/abl transcript, which indicates the presence of minimal residual disease (MRD).
