| Definition |
Aplastic anemia is a deficiency of certain types of blood cells caused by poor bone marrow function. It is a disease of diverse etiologies characterized by pancytopenia associated with a hypoplastic marrow. Possible pathophysiological mechanisms of aplastic anemia include defective hematopoietic stem cells, a deficient microenvironment of the marrow, impairment of cellular interactions necessary to sustain hematopoiesis, and immune suppression of marrow function. Replacement of the diseased marrow by a graft from a healthy allogeneic donor first requires immunosuppression of the patient so that the genetically disparate graft is accepted.
