Definition |
A technique for preventing GVHD is depletion, in particular T-cell depletion, which involves eliminating T lymphocytes in the donated marrow before it is given to the patient. The T-cells are removed or destroyed by means of monoclonal antibodies or other processes. Although T-cell depletion appears to reduce the chance that a patient will develop severe GVHD, this technique has other associated risks: Graft failure may be more likely when T-cell depleted marrow is used, and leukemia patients may be more likely to have a relapse.
