Context |
Often, as experimental design will be set up to allow subjects to repeat a word that they cannot read, where the general procedure is to have the subjects read. All the exemplars are nevertheless grouped together for analysis. Rarely is it asked any more whether, for instance, an apraxic would demonstrate delays in anticipatory coarticulation; when repeating, but not when reading. Nevertheless, once we fully understand the phonetics of the errors, we will be in a better position to truly distinguish apraxia, dysarthria, and true phonemic paraphasia. The technology of the day is allowing us to do precisely this with increasing sophistication and clarity. The emphasis is clearly on the micro-phonetic details and their acoustic and perceptual consequences, rather than on the nature of the elicitation of the speech itself. Consequently, cerebral connectionist accounts of apraxia of speech are, for all intents and purposes, practically nonexistent today.
