Human leukocyte-associated (HLA) antigens: A series of proteins on the surface of cells that are important in transplantation and transfusion. When bone marrow transplantation is being considered, the HLA´s on white blood cells (leukocytes) of the patient and the potential donor are compared. HLA´s on platelets are matched when platelets are being transfused. A perfect HLA match occurs only between identical twins.
