Definition |
Transfusional therapy is the mainstay of treatment of the thalassemia patient. Raising the hemoglobin level has two goals: to reduce tissue hypoxia, thus improving organ function, and secondly, to suppress endogenous hematopoiesis, which is largely ineffective. The level of hemoglobin required for the latter is higher than that needed to relieve tissue hypoxia.

Context |
Details on current transfusional therapy, i.e., frequency, volume of transfused blood, and mean basic hemoglobin level are taken from follow-up documentation charts. These charts also contained results of biochemical examinations, such as serum concentrations of iron, ferritin, and transferrin which were used to analyze the state of hemosiderosis, and the results of chelation therapy. Analysis of the prevalence of specific siderotic disorders is based on questionnaires filled out during yearly surveys which included cardiological, ophthalmological, ultrasound, and - depending on the patient´s age - endocrinological, radiological, and otological diagnostics.
