Definition The proliferation and maturation of megakaryocytes (giant polyploid cell of bone marrow that gives rise to 3-4,000 platelets).
Definition source Cancerweb. OMD – On-line Medical Dictionary.
Context All babies with thrombocytopenia due to placental insufficiency have been shown to have reduced numbers of circulating megakaryocytes and their progenitor cells (BFU-MK and CFU-MK). They also have elevated levels of thrombopoietin at birth consistent with a true reduction in megakaryocytopoiesis rather than a selective absence in circulating megakaryocyte progenitors. In the majority of cases the inhibition of megakaryocytopoiesis is severe.
