| Definition |
Monocytes and macrophages play a key role in phagocytosis. As a group, neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils may be referred to by names that describe how they look under the microscope. They are called granulocytes because of their dotted, or granular, appearance; the granules in these cells are filled with chemicals that can destroy foreign substances in the body. They also are called polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN´s, or “polys”) because of the shape of the cell nucleus. Lymphocytes and monocytes are referred to as agranulocytes or mononuclear cells.
