Part of speech Noun phrase
Variant GPC system, Grapheme to phoneme conversion route
Phraseology To reactivate the grapheme-phoneme conversion route.
Definition A mechanism which allows the access to the meaning of an orthographic string through a phonological ricodification of the graphemic string.
Context Lesser (1987) combines both of these notions and presents a cognitive neuropsychological transcoding model of reading aloud and writing to dictation. This model includes (1) an graphemic-to-phonemic conversion route for reading which is dependent on regularity of spelling; (2) a lexical route for reading aloud common words with irregular spellings without accessing meaning; and, (3) a main route consisting of direct reading through meaning, via the cognitive system. Lesser also supports the separation of a lexicon for written words ("visual input lexicon") and spoken words ("auditory input lexicon").
