Definition |
An infectious disease affecting all species,caused by Listeria monocytogenes and characterized by either meningoencephalitis (which causes a syndrome of circling,facial paralysis,somnolence,endophthalmitis and head pressing), abortion, or septicaemia in the newborn. In human, it is due to the ingestion of contaminated dairy products.

Some diseases, the so-called zoonoses, such as tuberculosis, salmonellosis and listeriosis can be transmitted to humans through contaminated food. These diseases can be particularly serious for certain categories of the population. Listeriosis may cause encephalitis and spontaneous abortions; salmonellosis is an emerging public health problem.
