Definition A deficiency of thyroid activity. In adults, it is most common in women and is characterised by decrease in basal metabolic rate, tiredness and lethargy, sensitivity to cold and menstrual disturbances. If untreated, it progresses to full blown myxoedema. In infants, severe hypothyroidism leads to cretinism. In juveniles, the manifestations are intermediate, with less severe mental and developmental retardation and only mild symptoms of the adult form. When due to pituitary deficiency of thyrotropin secretion it is called secondary hypothyroidism.
Definition source Cancerweb. OMD – On-line Medical Dictionary.
Context Immune-mediated destruction of the thyroid appears to be another factor contributing to the development of hypothyroidism after BMT, and the thyroid gland may become a target in posttransplant immune disorders including GVHD. Although Mulligan et al. reported that the thyroid can be a target of GVHD, we did not find any significant correlation between the development of thyrotoxicosis and the development of acute or chronic GVHD.
