Definition |
Infusion pumps which use the plastic reservoirs have a larger volume capacity and the Desferal is more dilute. The Desferal solution is filled to the end of the tubing so no air is present. The needle is inserted into the port for the Hickman or Portacath line. The infusion pump should be set to deliver the Desferal over about 12 to 16 hours. Many manufacturers in different countries now make infusion pumps. Full information can be obtained from TIP. The range of pumps has recently been supplemented with light-weight disposable “elastomeric”( = balloon) pumps. At one centre it has been found that these can greatly improve compliance, and appear to have an overall beneficial effect. It is planned to investigate their possible cardiac protective effect.
