filtering software |
|
|
Definition |
Filtering software follows three main models: "blacklisting" (where access to listed sites is blocked), "whitelisting" (where access is only possible to listed sites) and "neutral labelling" (where sites are labelled or rated, but it is up to the user to decide how to use the label or rating).

Context |
Filtering software is designed to screen Internet material for "inappropriate" content. Such software packages have been widely adopted, especially in light of their endorsement by President Clinton at a White House Summit following the U.S. Supreme Court´s mention of the software as perhaps being a preferable alternative to legislation such as the ill-fated Communications Decency Act.
