liner string

Definition |
A string of tubulars in a well similar to casing but that does not run all the way up to the surface as a casing string does. It may or may not be cemented into the well. It is hung by a mechanical system, a liner hanger, in the lower part of the preceding string.

Context |
The advantages [of using liners] are savings on pipe, less weight and a larger inside diameter between the surface and the top of the liner. But there are also a number of drawbacks: casing and cementing operations are more complex, the preceding string must be sized at the same bursting pressure as the liner, and the preceding string may be seriously weakened by the wear and tear of drillpipe rotating when the well is deepened.
