So it did seem that P.S. had improved in access to the lexical-orthographic representations of 50 words that were presented many times for corrected oral reading. There was some functional gain since these were words that had to be recognized for successful completion of his work. The success of this treatment, even combined with the previous treatment, was quite restricted. P.S. was still very slow in reading new materials he used on his job, since he had to ´sound out´ all but a few words, often trying several alternative pronunciations before hitting the correct response.
