Beyond the clinical classification of language disturbances, the cognitive approach sets out to "localize" the functional naming deficit(s) in individual patients. An evaluation of linguistic functions undertaken within this framework also determines a subject´s preserved abilities. During rehabilitation, a therapist can use these abilities to establish their interaction with the deficits) according to the modular connections proposed by the reference model. Note, however, that the model neither implies any prediction for the outcome of rehabilitation nor does it specify which strategy and/or technique ought to be selected for treatment of a precise impairment in a given patient.
