Context Language rehabilitation programmes based on phonological theory focus on the level of the phoneme and the syllable. Typically at the phonemic level, patients are trained first to master individual phones and then (re) learn how to combine them. This method is used both for patients with a speech apraxia where the main goal is the production of speech sounds (Dabul et al., 1978) and for patients with conduction aphasia where the objective is controlled phonemic production (Cubelli, Foresti and Consolini, 1988,). Miller (1989) proposes a similar technique for patients with speech disorders called phonetic derivation, whereby one sound is derived via progressive approximation from another.
