Context The relationship of localization of lesion within the frontal region to discourse was studied by Kaczmarek (1984) using tasks similar to the procedures used by Ulatowska et al. (1983). The patients were asked to repeat by themselves stories that had been told by the examiner, describe a situation depicted by pictures, and generate stories about specific topics, both familiar to the patient and more abstract. Although Kaczmarek studied brain tumor patients, the study is described here because of its relevance to head-injured patients. The most prominent finding in the patients´ discourse was their inability to organize information, as reflected by their excessive perseverations, digressions, con- fabulations, and use of stereotyped phrases.
