| He used English exclusively at work for 30 years before retiring 19 years pre-onset, using both Spanish and English every day since retiring, the Spanish translation equivalent was a successful cue to the retrieval of the English word. However, the reverse did not occur -i.e., an English translation equivalent did not facilitate retrieval of a Spanish word. This underscores the unidirectionality of translation skills available to some bilingual aphasics (see Paradis, Goldblum and Abidi, 1982; Paradis, 1984). In this case, unidirectionality is explained by the fact that the subject probably learned the names of English lexical items by reference to their Spanish equivalents, as suggested by the author (Bond, 1984: 133). |
