Definition Electrophysiologic responses representing summated, discrete electrical brain discharges that are elicited by a sensory stimulus or other event along the ascending pathways to the cerebral cortex.
Electrophysiologic responses representing summated, discrete electrical brain discharges that are elicited by a sensory stimulus or other event along the ascending pathways to the cerebral cortex. The evoked potential is time locked to the stimuli. Although the magnitude of the response is generally smaller than that of the ongoing EEG, the background EEG occurs randomly with respect to the stimuli and is averaged out over repeated trials.

Context Tourette’s syndrome afflicts mainly boys under 13 years (mean 7 yrs) and about 37 per cent of the population are either left-handed or of mixed handedness (Shapiro et al. 1972). Abnormalities in the EEG are found in most cases (Sweet et al. 1973).The syndrome is characterized by a variety of involuntarily produced facial and body tics, barking and grunting, and, in the later stages, involuntarily produced automatic utterances which are usually coprolalic. Sometimes there may be echolalia. Although individuals with Tourette’s syndrome are aware that they are producing these utterances, they appear still unable to suppress their emergence.
