Part of speech Noun phrase
Definition The study of how functional skills change as a result of brain dysfunction from injury and disease.
The study of how functional skills (e.g., memory, language, attention, reading, planning, visual-spatial analysis, problem-solving, and so forth) change as a result of brain dysfunction from injury and disease; (The determination of brain diagnosis based, in part, on results of psychological tests sensitive to brain injury/disease, compared with normative performance of non-injured individuals on those same tests; the analysis of life-consequences of brain injury/disease and the processes by which people may recover from dysfunction and/or adapt to disabilities of permanent dysfunction).

Context The skilled clinician obviously makes maximal use of his or her communicative interactions with the patient to rule out aphasia, establish a diagnosis, or reach a decision that a more comprehensive diagnostic assessment is warranted, (SCREENING TESTS), such as the one described for Halstead-Reitan examinations (Reitan, 1984; Wheeler & Reitan, 1962), reflect the once-popular application arising out of clinical psychology in the 1950s of screening individuals for the presence or absence of "organicity" (a loose term referring to any form of damage to the nervous system affecting psychological functions), particularly in high-risk groups and in conjunction with psychiatric evaluations. In relation to aphasia, some relatively brief and highly sensitive screening tests are available, but testing for the purpose of screening has lost its attractiveness and usefulness since the 1950s.
