Part of speech Noun phrase
Definition A mechanism which allows the access to the meaning of a phonological string through an ortographic ricodification of the phonemes.
Definition source Vista-Mead 2001
Context This information, which we have acquired through our experience with the written language, is often referred to as knowledge of phoneme-grapheme correspondences. The system, which produces a written form corresponding to a phonological input, is often referred to as the phoneme-grapheme conversion , or PGC system. Thus, if we wished to spell a spoken word whose spelling we did not know, for example, /hezikaest/, we would probably arrive at spellings such as HEZIKAST, HESICAST, HESYCAST, and HESYCHAST.
