Definition |
A test of auditory comprehension involving commands of graded length and complexity that is to be executed with tokens varying in colour, shape and size. The Token Test is too difficult for many aphasic patients, but is sensitive to mild or latent comprehension disturbance. Many versions of this test exist. (De Renzi and Vignolo, L. 1962. The Token Test: A sensitive test to detect receptive disturbances in aphasics).

Context |
Their results showed dissociation between performance of left- and right-brain-damaged patients, with aphasics being selectively impaired in the nonverbal and language inputs. Moreover, they found a correlation between performance on the nonverbal task and the Token Test, a test sensitive to auditory language comprehension deficits (De Renzi & Vignolo, 1962). It is interesting to note that the Token Test requires, in the more complex parts of the test, the ability to sequence (i.e., order) a number of stimuli. The relation between this task and the sequencing deficit of auditory stimuli may be due to the nature of the two tasks (i.e., sequencing) rather than to an auditory impairment affecting language comprehension.
