Definition |
A task in which a patient is provided with four pictures and an oral word related to one of them, and is required to point at the corresponding picture. A task in which a patient is provided with four pictures and an oral word related to one of them, and is required to point at the corresponding picture. The four words uttered by the therapist are semantically related words. For example the patient is provided with four pictures representing the concepts of "music", "noise", "a music notes" and of " sound", and the patient is asked to point at one of these alternatives corresponding to the uttered word.

Context |
Auditory word-to-picture matching has also been used as a facilitator of word retrieval. This involves having the patient point to a picture of a spoken target from an array including semantically related foils (Howard et al., 1985a, 1985b; Prins et al., 1989). Pointing to a semantically related picture of a spoken target word is a second method, but it should be mentioned that this technique was also developed on the notion that auditory stimulation of one lexical item would serve to deblock the category, thus facilitating the retrieval of all other members of that category (Howard et al., 1985a).
