The evidence for this was that he had difficulty in sounding out unfamiliar written words, and consequently in judging whether pairs of non-words were homophonic. Cook therefore argued that enhancement of grapheme and phoneme associations might enable the partial information in the two damaged output lexicons to be combined. If he could convert what output information he had available in the graphemic lexicon into usable form as phonemes, he could provide himself with the phonic cues which enabled him to access items in his phonological lexicon when other people provided them.
