Architecture of the lexical processing system
|
Definition |
System that controls the processing of words, whose functional architecture is composed of interconnected components which are functionally indipendent. System which is often referred to as the functional architecture of the lexical system that controls the processing of words organized on the basis of input and output components. A first distinction between input and output components is drawn between the modality of input or output phonological or orthographic, such that each modality is represented separately for input and output.

Context |
A common component can be inferred if, within some theory, there is a component whose function is such that, when damaged, the observed association should occur. Likewise a distinction among components will be motivated only if, within some theory, a pattern of performance cannot be accounted for without postulating additional components. Thus, although the functional architecture of the lexical processing system proposed in this chapter may very well be incorrect, it has not been shown to be incorrect with these examples.
