Animal health is also an important factor in food safety. Some diseases, the so-called zoonoses, such as tuberculosis, salmonellosis and listeriosis can be transmitted to humans through contaminated food. These diseases can be particularly serious for certain categories of the population. Listeriosis may cause encephalitis and spontaneous abortions; salmonellosis is an emerging public health problem.
