Definition Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly infectious viral disease that afflicts cloven-hooved animals— when infected, they’ll exhibit a fever and develop blisters, usually around the mouth and feet. The disease can be spread by direct or indirect contact with infected animals; mechanically, by the movement of people, uninfected animals, and even cars; and through the air. Essentially, the virus can be spread by anything that moves. Although human infection of Foot and Mouth Disease has been reported, cases are rare and of no health significance—the last report of human infection appears to have been in the 1960s.
