Definition Brucella melitensis is a bacterial disease which can affect most species of domestic animals, but sheep and goats, particularly milking breeds, are the most susceptible. Cattle may occasionally be affected and the disease may appear in pigs. In humans the disease is known as Malta fever.

Context Existing eradication and disease control programmes, such as those for tuberculosis and brucellosis, should be continued and where possible re-enforced; in particular, in those Member States whose status with regard to these diseases remains problematic. Particular attention should be devoted to the control of hydatidosis and Brucella militensis in Mediterranean regions.
