Ultrafiltration is the removal of water from the plasma by hydrostatic force
Ultrafiltration is applied in haemodialysis to remove excess water from patient. If for instance the hydrostatic pressure is greater in the blood compartment than in the dialysate compartment, the small water molecules are forced through the membrane, from blood to dialysate. In a process called solvent drag, solutes with low molecular weights that can pass through the membrane pores are swept along with the water. The driving force for ultrafiltration is the transmembrane pressure (TMP), which is determined by the mean hydrostatic pressures, the dialysate (Pd) and blood compartment (Pb), and by the oncotic pressure (Po) in the blood compartment
