A protozoon microorganism that is the causative agent of pneumocystis pneumonia in immunocompromised patients (e.g. With AIDS). It is most closely related to ustomycetous yeasts.
No extensive chronic GVHD has occurred, so far. In the control group, 10 patients (67%) are alive and free of disease after an observation period of 11 months. One patient is alive but is suffering from recurrent leukemia. There were three early deaths because of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, pneumonitis, and veno-occlusive liver disease.
