| Erythroid hyperplasia compensates for the ineffective erythropoiesis and hemolysis in thalassemia. This leads to expansion of the haemopoietic bone marrow, and to extramedullary hematopoiesis which can cause a number of problems: the skull and other bones may be deformed, following intramedullary expansion and cortical bone thinning |

| Because of the severe erythroid hyperplasia, erythropoietic tissue can develop outside the bone marrow cavity. A recent prospective computerized tomographic study found that 65% of adults with thalassaemia intermedia had extramedullary erythropoietic masses. |
