We considered patients as thalassemia intermedia when they present moderate to severe anemia (Hb < 10 g/dl), splenomegaly, hyperbilirubinemia, erythroblasts in peripheral blood smear, and an a/non-a ratio higher than 2.5 (absolute criteria), possibly associated with mild to moderately elevated HbF level, reticulocytosis, thalassemia-like bone modifications, and liver enlargement.
