Definition |
One of three specialized lymphocyte types. B-lymphocytes are blood cells of the immune system derived from the bone marrow and spleen involved in the production of antibodies. They transform into plasma cells and produce antibodies in response to foreign substances such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. B-lymphocytes float through all body fluids, are able to detect the presence of foreign invaders, and produce antibodies on their own and when primed by T-lymphocytes. B-lymphocytes can later differentiate into plasma and memory cells. B-cells mediate the “humoral” immune response. B cells received their name from a structure called the bursa of Fabricius in birds, which was found to be the source of antibody-producing lymphocytes. In humans, the bone marrow may be the equivalent of the bursa. Thus, in humans “B” can be thought of as indicating that the lymphocytes are derived initially from the bone marrow.

Moreover, these B-cell lineage leukemias were found to have early B-lymphocyte development, before the maturation of surface immunoglobulin and, therefore, termed “B-precursor ALL”.
