Definition Disappearance of the signs and symptoms of cancer or other disease. When this happens, the disease is said to be "in remission." A remission can be temporary or permanent.
A disappearance of evidence of a disease, usually as a result of treatment. The terms "complete" or "partial" are used to modify the term "remission." Complete remission means all evidence of the disease is gone. Partial remission means the disease is markedly improved by treatment, but residual evidence of the disease is present. Long-term benefit usually requires a complete remission, especially in acute leukemia .

Context Once remission has been achieved, systemic treatment in conjunction with central nervous system (CNS)sanctuary therapy follows. The intensity of the postinduction chemotherapy varies considerably, but all patients receive some form of "intensification" following achievement of remission and before beginning continuous maintenance therapy.
