A procedure to replace bone marrow destroyed by treatment with high doses of anticancer drugs or radiation in which a section of bone marrow is taken from one person and transplanted into another. Transplantation may be autologous (an individual´s own marrow saved before tretment), allogeneic (marrow donated by someone else), or syngeneic (marrow donated by an identical twin). BMT can be a treatment option in leukaemia.
The combination of the stratification criteria and treatment results of this study did not allow selection of subgroups at veryhigh risk of leukemiarelapse who might have benefited from very aggressive therapy, including BMT in first remission, confirming that these subgroups may be identified more efficiently by biological markers or initial treatment response.
