Definition |
A laboratory test requiring a small blood sample with which to measure the number and types of cells circulating in the blood. The number of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets are present in the patients sample of blood is determined. Low numbers of red or white blood cells are described as anemia or leukopenia, respectively. High leukocyte count is called leukocytosis. A lack of mature neutrophils (bacteria-destroying white blood cells) is known as neutropenia or granulocytopenia. Thrombocytopenia is the term used for a low number of blood-clotting platelets, and thrombocytosis refers to a high number of platelets.
