Full form Electronic Data Interchange
Definition Electronic data interchange (EDI) is, at the simplest level, nothing more than a technology for exchanging information. One computer is linked to another and a stream of data is sent across the link. […] Where EDI becomes interesting, both commercially and legally, is if the messages are structured in such a way that they can be processed automatically. The most common use of such messages is to carry out trade, particularly international trade, and it is in this sense that the term EDI is most commonly used. This also gives rise to the alternative term ´paperless trading´, which is particularly common in the United States.

Context Enlarging the scope of electronic commerce to the general public on global markets, the Internet is, at the same time, bringing radical changes in business-to-business transactions, as companies migrate from proprietary networks and closed protocols (such as traditional EDI) to the Internet and to corporate "Intranets".
