The primary component of any fluid circulating system providing the driving force that sends the fluid through the route that it must travel. They are of the reciprocating piston-type, with the reciprocating movement of pistons and rods produced by conventional crankshaft and connecting rod system.
Almost all mud pumps today are powered by diesel engines, gas engines, or electric motors. Those designed for drilling have ratings up to 1,750 input hp. They are capable of moving large volumes of fluid at pressures as high as 5,000 pounds psi.
