Definition |
The mechanical assembly connecting the rotary drive system on the surface to the drilling bit. On the surface, it hangs from the hook by the swivel and the rotary drive comes from the kelly. It fulfils several functions: (a) transmits the energy required to break up the rock formation by whatever bit may be used; (b) guides and controls the trajectory of the bit; (c) exerts a compressive force on the drilling bit, or weight on the bit; (d) allows drilling fluid to circulate with minimum pressure losses.
