A high-pressure cylinder containing precharged nitrogen gas and hydraulic fluid, which is mounted on skids next to the rig. Its main function is to close the blowout preventers and to activate the choke lines and kill lines
Because the preventer must be able to close quickly, the hydraulic fluid is put under 1,500-3,000 psi of pressure by nitrogen gas in the accumulator unit.
