A strong, four- or six-sided high-grade molybdenum steel pipe located at the top of the drill string, that comes in lengths of 40 and 54 ft. It is fitted on the master bushing and rotary table and runs through the kelly bushing. Its main functions are to: (a) connect the swivel to the uppermost length of drill pipe, (b) transmit rotary torque to the drillstring, (c) allow the drillstring to move longitudinally while keeping rotation under way, (d) convey the drilling fluid from the swivel into the drillstring.
