A short section of cylindrical steel pipe with a slightly larger outer diameter than the casing and female threads on the inside, which is used to connect joints of casing.
The tool joint should be as close to the rotary as possible during makeup and breakout. If a tool joint is positioned more than maximum height above the rotary slips, the pipe does not have enough strength to resist bending.
