| An operation that prevents fluid flow between the formation and the casing. The cement is pumped around the casing to seal the annulus, to protect the casing from corrosion, and to prevent pollution of freshwater formations near the surface. |

Cementing is the common term for the process of placing a slurry usually formed by combining cementitious material with a liquid, into the annulus between the outside of the casing in the hole and the wall of the hole. |
