A safety valve that is run on a drillstring just above the kelly. It is screwed onto the uppermost connection to close off the inside of the drillstring in the event of a kick. It is used to stop fluids from flowing up the drillstring.
The Griffith Drillpipe Safety Valve can be used as a drillpipe safety valve or upper kelly valve to control blowout pressures, or as a lower kelly valve to prevent loss of drilling fluid when the kelly is disconnected.
