A stationary metal framework on the top of the derrick or mast of a drilling rig that holds sheaves that rotate on a horizontal shaft mounted on bearings with a greased lubricating system. The drilling line goes through it. It can also hold a sheave for the coring reel drum and small sheaves for a Manila rope from the friction cathead.
In general, the crown and travelling block sheave diameter should be 30-35 times the wire-line to prevent excessive wear and to increase the fatigue life of the drilling line.
