A casing string of very lightweight pipe (rolled sheet metal) set in the subsoil at a depth of around a dozen meters. It is used to secure the blowout preventers and wellhead equipment before drilling the surface casing hole. It is also used to channel the mud when drilling is started up and to keep the loose surface formations from being washed away. It is usually run in and cemented by the service companies that prepare the well site and is connected to a mud return line.
